Fulbright Fun

March 5th, 2011

IMG00331Last night the International Cultural Exchange took some of the CCID students and international friends to the annual Fulbright Arts Festival.  More than that, three of the CCID students staged a performance.

It was great fun.  There was a evening of songs, poems, dancing, and performances.

IMG00348For us the highlight was a stunning and insightful performance by our own Nigi and Songi from South Africa.  They gave the audience an entertaining look at small town life in South Africa.  Though song, dance, music, poetry and video they entranced the full auditorium with their show.

The songs in the show were also well know by almost all the folks in the audience who were from Africa.  They sang along with Nigi’s performance.

There were some great performances from around the world that everyone enjoyed.

See you at our next event.

Let’s Go Dynamos

September 19th, 2010

Thanks to our friends at the Dynamos club we had a special evening at the Dynamos soccer (football) this evening.

IMG_9725 We started the evening with an “tailgate” party in the parking lot.  Thanks to our friendship partners, we had some great homemade sandwiches, snacks, and sweets.

After everyone arrived and filled up on great food, we headed out to the game.  When the Dynamos came on the field, they had the “International Cultural Exchange” on the big board.  Unfortunately we missed getting a picture of it.  But all the fans in the stadium got to see it.

IMG_9758 We enjoyed the game and had some great fun.

After the game there were fireworks.  We had great seats to watch the sky light up.

Finally, we broke out the food again and we spent some time together as the traffic died down.

IMG_9795 Thanks again to everyone who came, who prepared and brought food, an to the Houston Dynamos for the tickets.

Hope to see you at the next event.

City Tour and Sister Cities Concert

September 11th, 2010

IMG_9567 Welcome to our new international friends this year.  Today we had the chance to take a small tour around Houston to visit some of the noteworthy sights.

We enjoyed a spectacular view of downtown, and also a small lunch picnic outside at the University of Saint Thomas.

Afterwards, we ended the day by joining with some of our CCID friends at the 5th annual Sister Cities Concert.

IMG_9600 At the concert we were introduced to the drum beats and dance of the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Texas.  This is a traditional cultural music of Okinawa, Japan.

The second performance was the Houston Jazz Quartet.  This jazz quartet is the premier jazz ensemble in Texas.

At the end of day we took a short walk over to the famous Red Swing in the park at the Menil Collection.  In case you were wondering:

The Red Swing Project started in February 2007 as an urban intervention within the city of Austin, Texas. The initial project idea was to anonymously hang red swings in public places and see what happens, paying particular attention to public response to this familiar object set in an unfamiliar place.

Hope to see you at our next event.
